Review

In early 2012 Nikon wanted to breathe new life into the COOLPIX S series, so they came out with three revamped models dubbed the S9300, S6300, S4300, and S3300. The S6300 is nothing more than a 6200 with a 16 mp sensor and EXPEED C2 processor. Other than that there's not much to talk about in terms of its distinction from its predecessor or the other three cameras in the revamped COOLPIX S series.

About the only thing the S6300 has going for it is its exceptionally low price. If you're looking for a compact point-and-shoot you can stick in your shirt pocket when you head out on your vacation, this might be the camera for you. It's cheap enough that if you damage it you probably won't care, yet the picture quality is good enough to help you remember your vacation holidays or take pictures to upload FaceBook. If you're looking for anything beyond that, don't waste your money replacing the camera you already own.

There has to be some upsides to this camera, right? Well, as far as compact point-and-shoots go, it is true that the S6300 offers fairly snappy performance. You even get custom white balance and sensor-shift image stabilization. If you're currently using your smartphone for your amateur picture needs maybe this camera is a good choice for you.

Advantages: very friendly price; 16 mp resolution; compact and light weight; four different color options.

Disadvantages: very few manual options; inconsistent image quality; noise at either end of the ISO spectrum.

Price and Availability: the Nikon COOLPIX S6300 is currently available in North America, the UK, Australia, and limited Asian markets - other locations will vary; US price: $129-$199; UK price: £123-£216
