Review

If you combine some of the latest cutting-edge photographic technology with 1980s retro styling what would you end up with? The Fujifilm X-Pro1. Released this past April Fuji offers a new camera to the professional market that could very easily end up becoming a trend setter.

On the positive side the X-Pro1 offer some of the best picture quality for an entry-level pro-class camera. Fuji introduced a brand-new sensor with this camera which, when combined with its intelligent JPEG processing, delivers great quality even at high ISOs. In our tests around town we focused a lot on the night shots (using cityscapes as our backdrop) and were very pleased with the results. Interestingly, we found that many of our low light shots looked more like something taken with a high-quality 35mm rather than the digital. That's not always a bad thing.

On the negative side it seems as though Fuji has robbed its Pro customers of a lot of advanced features. Though the X-Pro1 does a lot more than your standard point-and-shoot for entry-level DSLR, we would expect more features for the price. You also may find the profile a little more bulky and heavy than you're used to if you're not old enough to have used a classic, aluminum-body 35 mm.

Advantages: best image quality in its class; film simulation filters; hybrid multi-viewfinder; X-Trans CMOS sensor; lots of interchangeable lenses available.

Disadvantages: slower than expected autofocus; bulky size; slow image processing; lack of more advanced features.
