Review

We can always count on Fuji to push the envelope when it comes to style and design. Nothing shows that better than the FinePix Z900EXR the company released this past spring. Right off the bat you'll notice it's different because the smallish lenses in the upper left-hand corner, the flash is dead center, and Fuji utilizes a sliding metal plate to cover both while turning the camera on off.

Our first impressions led us to believe the Z900EXR was all fluff and no performance. We were pleased to find those first impressions incorrect. Fuji has put a new EXRCMOS sensor in to replace the CCD of the Z900s predecessor; they've also increased the resolution to 16 mp and included full HD 1080p video.

Our tests showed great results for image quality and consistency under excellent to fair conditions. Low light produces softness in noise, but what ultra-compact doesn't do the same? As far as performance is concerned the Z900 isn't the fastest compact on the market but it is adequate.

Lastly, we thought for sure we would be very disappointed with the profile and case design. Starting with the lens, it's usually not a good idea to put it in the upper left-hand corner. But in this case the positioning keeps it far enough away from the flash to make it easier to take decent pictures in low light. As for the case itself, it feels sturdy, it's textured to make for easy gripping, and it's rather comfortable.

Advantages: EXRCMOS sensor; HD video; decent picture quality; easy to hold profile; 3.5" display; great price.

Disadvantages: somewhat confusing menu system; uncomfortable controls; average speed.

Price and Availability: the Fujifilm FinePix Z900EXR is officially available worldwide but supplies may be limited outside of Europe and Asia; US price: $89-$299; UK price: £89-£139
