Review
When Canon first introduced the PowerShot SD1100IS in 2008 its main marketing tactic was to say the camera was "all about you"; a strategy that played heavily on cosmetic appeal with a little bit of new technology mixed in. The camera sold fairly well during its first few years of production as a cost-effective point and shoot for amateurs who did not have smart phone cameras. The camera still is available, though Canon doesn't nearly sell the same volume four years later.
The PowerShot SD1100IS is an upgrade over the previously released SD1000, most notably in the 7 mp to 8 mp boost. As you would expect from Canon this camera is capable of some very high quality pictures under good conditions. Even in low light you get fairly good performance; excessive light leads to some noise and distortion. Unfortunately, the SD1100 doesn't take pictures as well as its older brother.
In terms of the controls and the menu system Canon comes through with shining colors again. The company may be lacking when it comes to aesthetic appeal, ergonomics, and construction choices, but one thing they do very well is produce cameras that are intuitive and easy to use. The only thing lacking was the SD1100 over its predecessor is a raised function button. For this model the button is flat, making it difficult to locate if you're not looking directly at the camera.
Advantages: affordable price; good picture quality; upgraded resolution; easy to use menu system; small enough to put in your shirt pocket
Disadvantages: inconsistent results with built-in flash; inconsistent video; inconsistent indoor shots even under identical lighting conditions
